Weight lifting AFTER Carpal Tunnel Surgery.

Using NewGrips AFTER Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Hello Alan,

As you might recall we had quite a conversation about my carpal tunnel condition at the time I ordered the NewGrips. I had already had the release on the right hand (8-5-03) and was about to undergo the same surgery on the left hand (9-5-03). Since our conversation, the surgery on the left hand and three weeks of rehab are complete. The surgery on both hands was an instant success. It provided a welcome relief for my prior suffering. Post op, I did notice a significant loss of grip strength. The therapist assured me this was normal, and that it should return with exercise. At that time it was measured at 70 pounds on a grip test apparatus at the rehab clinic (9-22-03). My therapy was completed yesterday (102.px0-03) and my grip strength has improved to 110 pounds. Yea for rehab !

I was anxious to hit the weights after the second surgery and with the doctor's permission started back on my regular routine (9-22-03) on a Monday (chest day). Handling the bar on bench press was impossible, even with minimal weight. The pillar pain on those two inch incisions was just too much. I put on the NewGrips and was able to complete the workout on flat and incline bench, just two weeks after the surgery on my left hand. There was still tenderness over the incisions; however it was tolerable. I thank "NewGrips" for an early start. I did not perform wrist or forearm exercises at that time, as these were being done at the rehab clinic three times per week. Now that my rehab is complete. I will incorporate these exercises back into my routine.

I doubt I will ever desire to "wrist flex" the heavier weights I used to use on forearm/wrist exercises. I suspicion that loading the wrist with intense weight, in the max flexed position initiates the inflammatory process in the carpal tunnel area. I'll cut the weight back on these exercises. Forearm exercises with the wrist straight and ridged (reverse forearm curl) should be OK.

After three weeks of lifting with New Grips, I have found them to be a necessary piece of equipment that I can't do without. The extra pad really helped.!!!

Alan I could go on, but I don't want to bore you. Thanks again for a great product.

Sincerely,
R L Barrett
